VERSE 1
Well, I named my boat after my Grand-Maw,
After my Grandfather, too.
Her name was Beulah, and his Charles Leonard,
But Lynn was what everybody knew.
And though he was a carpenter,
He never dreamed of building homes that would float.
And don't ask me how a dusty cotton gin town,
Raised a grandkid with a dream about a boat.
CHORUS
Well, here's how to build a boat,
You put on music praising the Lord,
And you turn it up to thank Him for the things He's done,
Lay down your tools, and you raise your arms,
And the sawdust layin' on the old barn floor
Can only help as you turn and spin,
As you praise the Lord for the man you are,
And go dancin' 'round the Beulah Lynn.
VERSE 2
Now, in between the songs the Lord gives me,
There's a dream I try to fit in.
It's not too big, just a little weekender of a boat
I call the Beulah Lynn.
It was all just a bunch of rough sketches and lines,
Rolled up in the piano stool.
Then that song by ol' Guy Clark got me to thinking,
Are you really just a dreamin' fool?
So the drafting board came down from the attic,
And the lines laid out again,
And when the Lord's not giving me a song at the piano,
I'll be working on the Beulah Lynn.
(REPEAT CHORUS)
VERSE 3
Now dreams are such a funny thing,
You've got to give 'em a start to ever give 'em wings.
And maybe next year, if the music comes through,
I'll lay down a keel, set up a frame or two.
And it's not a bad thing, if the kids, home from college,
Find me working on the boat again.
And I guess it's not that bad, if it takes until the grandkids
Find me working on the Beulah Lynn.
(REPEAT CHORUS)
VERSE 4
Now a boat is a mistress, but did you know,
That my wife and I met on a boat?
And as we grow old, I don't think she'll mind
If Miss Beulah Lynn takes up some time.
'Cause she is just as eager as I
To be free on the wings of the wind,
And I hope we dance together when the wind and the waves
Go dancin' with the Beulah Lynn.
CHORUS (2X)
Well, here's how to build a boat,
You put on music praising the Lord,
And you turn it up to thank Him for the things He's done,
Lay down your tools, and you raise your arms,
And the sawdust layin' on the old barn floor,
Can only help as you turn and spin,
As you praise the Lord for the man you are,
And go dancin' 'round the Beulah Lynn.
VERSE 5 (SLOWER)
Well, I'll name my boat after my Grand-Maw,
After my Grandfather, too,
Her name was Beulah, and his Charles Leonard,
But Lynn was what everybody knew.
And theirs was such a fine dance,
Like the hull and the waves, sail and wind.
And I hope the Lord Jesus gives me time up in Heaven,
To go dancin' with Beulah and Lynn.
CHORUS 2
Well, here's how to build a life,
You put on music praising the Lord,
And you turn it up to thank Him for the things He's done,
Lay down your cares, and you raise your arms,
And the sawdust layin' on the old barn floor,
Can only help as you turn and spin,
As you praise the Lord for the man you are,
And go dancin' 'round the Beulah Lynn.
CHORUS 1
Well, here's how to build a boat,
You put on music praising the Lord,
And you turn it up to thank Him for the things He's done,
Lay down your tools, and you raise your arms,
And the sawdust layin' on the old barn floor,
Can only help as you turn and spin,
As you praise the Lord for the man you are,
And go dancin' 'round the Beulah Lynn.
